About FreeCAD
FreeCAD е програма за параметрично 3D CAD моделиране. Разработва се изцяло под Отворен Код (LGPL License). FreeCAD и е с основен фокус механичното инжинерство and дезайн на продукти но има широк диапазон приложения, като например в архитектурата, роботиката и т.н.
FreeCAD има инструменти подобни на to Catia, SolidWorks или Solid Edge, и затова попада в категорията на MCAD, PLM, CAx и CAE програми. Базира се на параметричното моделиране на обекти. FreeCad има модулна софтуерна архитектура, която позволява лесно добавяне на нови функции без промяна на самата програма.
Както и други модерни програми за 3D CAD моделиране има много 2D инструменти за да позволи чертането на 2D фигури, и за извличането на 2D чертежи от 3D моделите. От друга страна, директното чертане на 2D чертежи (подобно на AutoCAD LT) не е основния фокус на FreeCad, нито пък е анимирането на органични форми (подобно на Maya, 3ds Max, Blender и Cinema 4D). В бъдещето, благодарение на адаптивноста и модуларната си структура, FreeCAD може да стане полезен и в тези области.
FreeCAD makes heavy use of all the great open-source libraries that exist out there in the field of Scientific Computing. Among them are OpenCascade, a powerful CAD kernel, Coin3D, an incarnation of Open Inventor, Qt, the world-famous UI framework, and Python, one of the best scripting languages available. FreeCAD itself can also be used as a library by other programs.
FreeCAD is also fully multi-platform, and currently runs flawlessly on Windows and Linux/Unix and Mac OSX systems, with the exact same look and functionality on all platforms.

The FreeCAD project was started as far as 2001, as described in its history page.
FreeCAD is maintained and developed by a community of enthusiastic developers and users (see the contributors page). They work on FreeCAD voluntarily, in their free time. They cannot guarantee that FreeCAD contains or will contain everything you might wish, but they will usually do their best! The community gathers on the FreeCAD forum, where most of the ideas and decisions are discussed. Feel free to join us there!
